Loktak lake is treated by the valley based people as Septic Tank
A programe was held inconnection with the release of integrated management plan for the Barak River Conservation Project and Keibul Lamjao National Park under Wild Life Institute of India(WII) held at Hotel Classic Grande, Loktak Develepment Authoriy(LDA) Chairman M. Asinikumar expressed concerns about the depleting condition of the Loktak Lake which name was even included in Montreaux record as one of the depleting lakes in the world. He stated that Loktak lake is treated by the valley based people as Septic Tank. He further blames the Ithai Dam Project of 1980 for the depletion of the lake and also for the dead of many living species which belong to the lake. He further said that it was very unfortunate that in the DPR which was formed in connection with the Ithai Dam Project, there was no concern for the prevention of the nature at any cost.
He mentioned about the past incidents where the Forest and Wildlife officials were prevented by the Villagers and the misunderstanding that happened during that time. Later, he said that political leaders during that period lead the villagers in wrong direction and the situation is cleared now and that people now understands the value of the indigenous Sangai and it is our respomsibility as people of the state to conserve and protect the deteriorating Loktak Lake.
